Description
A view of the ruined church of Zonnebeke and a corner of the once charming little lake alongside which it stood before the area became one of the greatest battle grounds in history. In the fighting which preceded the taking of this photograph, on 5 October 1917, the ground was torn into waves by the terrific artillery fire, and heavy rains converted it into a treacherous sea of mud.
