Studio portrait of 4391 Private (Pte) Hector McAulay, 54th Battalion, of Waverley NSW. Pte McAulay enlisted on 22 September 1915 and was killed in action in France on 19 July 1916. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War. Pte Hector McAulay had originally enlisted in the 1st Battalion with his brother 4270A Pte Roderick McAulay. They embarked from Sydney on HMAT Aeneas with the 13th Reinforcements on 20 December 1915, and transferred to the 54th Battalion in Egypt. The brothers were both killed in action on 19 July 1916, Pte Hector McAulay, aged 29, and Pte Roderick McAulay, 35.
