Description

Studio portrait of 172 Private (Pte) Charles Ernest Slocombe, 36th Battalion, of Goulburn, NSW. A clerk prior to his enlistment on 6 January 1916, Pte Slocombe was killed in action in France on 22 January 1917 aged 36 years. Many of his relatives also served in the war, including a brother, a nephew and numerous cousins. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War.
