Studio portrait of 1589 Lance Sergeant (LSgt) Thomas William Watson, 18th Battalion, of Warrnambool, Vic. LSgt Watson enlisted on 7 April 1915 and was killed in action at Gallipoli on 27 August 1915. He had previously served with the 5th Contingent of the Victorian Mounted Rifles (VMR) in the Boer War and later at Rabaul, New Guinea as a member of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN + MEF). His cousin, Lieutenant (Lt) J W Witton, 24th Battalion, also served with him on the Gallipoli Peninsula where he was wounded. On recovery, and after further service, Lt Witton returned to Australia on 8 August 1918. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War. L Sgt Watson was a cutter in a clothing factory employed by Anthony Hordern.
