Studio portrait of 3586 Private (Pte) Alexander Thomas O'Donnell, 54th Battalion, of Kogarah, NSW. Pte O'Donnell enlisted on 27 October 1915 and was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France on 20 July 1916. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War. Pte O'Donnell was employed by Anthony Hordern as a mercer prior to his enlistment. Two other brothers also served with him in the AIF. 288 Pte Harold Gordon O'Donnell, 5th Company, Australian Machine Gun Corps, died of wounds in France on 21 June 1917. Captain John Layman O'Donnell, 18th Battalion, returned to Australia on 13 March 1918.
