Studio portrait of 4391 Private (Pte) William Arthur Clifton, 18th Battalion, of Redfern, NSW. Pte Clifton enlisted on 15 November 1915 and was killed in action in France, on 3 May 1917. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War. Pte Clifton was an iron worker in Anthony Hordern's Iron Yard, Elizabeth Street, Redfern, NSW, prior to his enlistment. (His brother, 4773 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Wenford John Clifton, 55th Battalion, of Randwick, NSW, was also killed in action in the previous month on 2 April 1917).
