Studio portrait of 180 Lance Sergeant (LSgt) Leslie John Shaw Smith, 55th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW (originally of Blackburn, England). LSgt Smith came to Australia aged 21, and was an electrician at the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney. He enlisted at Sydney on 21 August 1914 and joined the 3rd Battalion. Wounded at Gallipoli, he later transferred to the 55th Battalion on 13 February 1916 and was killed in action at Velu, near Bapaume, France on 2 April 1917. This portrait is one of a number displayed on a photo montage Honour Board made for the department store Anthony Hordern and Sons Ltd, Sydney by the returned soldier and sailor employees of the company. It commemorated 46 of the company's 48 employees who died as a result of their service in the First World War.
