Description

Three of the RAAF (R.T.F.V) men who were responsible for the recent successful recovery of a damaged RAAF Caribou (A4-173) from a delta airstrip (Hei Yen) near where Viet Cong forces were attacking nightly. Identified from left to right: 110253 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Kevin Martin, airframe fitter, of Ipswich, Qld; 218221 Corporal (Cpl) Charles John (Charlie) Downes, airframe fitter of Kyogle, NSW and A217838 LAC Peter Jones, aircraft metal worker, of Five Dock, NSW discuss the operation in front of the Caribou, now safely back in the hangar at Vung Tau. The RAAF team had to replace a wing, undercarriage, propeller, and make many repairs to instruments and airframe so that the aircraft could be flown back to the base for permanent repairs.
