Informal portrait of two returned servicemen who were blinded during the First World War. Identified right is 1627 Private Thomas Charles Smith, 3rd Battalion. A labourer of Fairfield, NSW, he enlisted on 11 December 1914 and sailed with the 3rd Reinforcements aboard HMAT Seang Choon on 11 February 1915. On the day before his 17th Birthday he was wounded while on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 14 May 1915, a gun shot wound to his face rendering him blind. He was returned to Australia on 13 August 1915. The seated soldier is unidentified.
