Description
Australian Civilian Police Sergeants Martin Hess and Shaun Bennetts with locally employed East Timorese UN staff at the Pousada Hotel in Maubisse. In the background are Malaysian Police member Mohammed Nik Rozi, and several international UN electoral staff. The Australian Federal Police contingent provided police monitors, election support, and military liaison as part of the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) supervision of the referendum, held on 30 August 1999, to allow the East Timorese to choose between autonomy within Indonesia or independence.
