Journee du Poilu (Soldier's Day)
Description
French First World War poster of a woman and soldier embracing, with the caption 'enfin seuls', translated as "finally alone". A dog (a traditional symbol of fidelity) stands on its hind legs looking at the couple. Behind the woman is a sewing machine with a caned chair that has been knocked over, evidently she has been surprised by her lover's return.
The poster was issued for the purposes of fundraising for soldiers' comforts.
