Be up to date Be a U.S. Marine
First World War U.S. Marines recruitment poster depicting a marine putting on a modern helmet as he looks over the battlefield. His old campaign hat hangs below him on a barbed wire fence post and his rifle rests on a barricade of sandbags, pointing toward the enemy. William Allen Rogers (1854-1931) attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Wittenberg College in Ohio, graduating from neither institution and his artistic training was self-taught. Roger's first cartoons were published in an Ohio newspaper, but his career as an illustrator began with the 'Daily Graphic' in New York in 1873. He assisted with news sketches and occasionally drew cartoons. In 1877 he was hired by 'Harper's Weekly', where he remained for 25 years. Roger's cartoon concepts during the First World War were noteworthy, being among his best work. He retired as a cartoonist on the 'Washington Post' in 1926.
