Informal portrait of 194 Sergeant (Sgt) Alexander Wilson Hamilton, 5 Battalion, AIF, buying cigarettes from an Egyptian boy. Sgt Hamilton later died of wounds sustained while serving with the 5th Battalion in France on 23 August 1918. The battalion was in reserve around St Martin's Wood at the time. Sgt Hamilton, who enlisted in 1914, had just been granted extended leave when he was killed. Sgt Hamilton has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux.
