An informal portrait of 185928 Private (Pte) Kelvin Richards, an Australian signaller serving with the Australian Force Communications Unit (FCU) contingent of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). He is dressed in jungle camouflage gear and is carrying his Steyr F88 rifle. Before the May 1993 elections, Pte Richards was serving as a signaller with a group of UN military observers (UNMOs) in the township of Stung in the central Cambodian province of Kampong Thom when they were shelled by Khmer Rouge forces, who later attacked in force at 2.30 in the morning. The Indonesian battalion stationed in the area were forced to retreat and Pte Richards' group had to seek shelter before the Indonesians returned to rescue them early the next day. Pte Richards was awarded a Land Commander's commendation for his work in Cambodia.
