Description
A Russian Mi-26 'Halo' helicopter, serial UN 73, framed by the tail section and retractable tailskid of another on the runway at Battambang airfield. This massive 33.8 metre long cargo transport helicopter features an eight bladed rotor powered by two turboshaft engines, a crew of five, has a load carrying capacity of 20,000 kilograms (similar to the C-130 Hercules) and is the heaviest and most powerful helicopter yet built. Two of these craft, painted in the traditional UN white and crewed by contract Russian civilian pilots, served with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), along with 26 utility and six medium lift helicopters, while an extra 12 utility helicopters were utilised during the election period.
