Detective Senior Constable Shane Connelly, a member of the first Australian Federal Police (AFP) ...
Detective Senior Constable Shane Connelly, a member of the first Australian Federal Police (AFP) contingent of ten officers to serve with the Civilian Police (CIVPOL) Component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), standing next to a young boy from the nearby town of Thmar Puok. They are pictured in front of the CIVPOL police station which the first contingent constructed when they arrived in May 1992, which formed part of the Khmer Police Training School. The young boy is sitting on the bonnet of an UNTAC vehicle which features an unusual metal 'UN' shaped sidelight protector and a red kangaroo painted on the side of the vehicle. The plight of children such as this young boy prompted AFP members to become actively involved in their welfare through English language tuition, donating their time and equipment to the Thmar Puok school and hospital and initiating appeals back in Australia for toys, clothing and bedding. The first AFP contingent left on 16 January 1993 and was replaced by the second which departed in September 1993.
