Description

Having returned to Cambodia from the refugee camps on the Thai border, a Cambodian family starts rebuilding their lives and a home from scratch. The return of 370,000 Cambodian refugees, undertaken by the Repatriation Component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), included offering each returnee a free choice of where they wished to resettle, 400 days worth of food rations, and a choice of either two hectares of land with a housing kit; a household plot with a housing kit, or a cash grant. This family group has chosen to resettle in the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey, a Khmer Rouge-controlled region also known as the 'Liberated Zone'.
