Description

An ossuary featuring rows of bleached skulls exhumed from pits in the killing fields of Choeung Ek lie in glass cases in a Stupa (or Chedi) which was built on the site in the 1980s as a memorial to the dead and as a focus for Buddhist ceremonies. The skulls have been laid out on tiers and labelled according to age and sex, and many show the holes and cracks that tell of their violent deaths. The Stupa is the focus for Cambodia's annual Genocide Day, held every 9 May to commemorate the estimated 2 million victims of Pol Pot's regime.
