Description

A homeless boy from the Siem Reap district appears to reflect the despondency of the Cambodian nation as he sits in torn and dirty clothes amongst the stones of the late twelfth century State Temple complex of Angkor Thom, built by Khmer king Jayavarman VII. The weathered sandstone steps behind him feature balustrades carved into the shapes of two 'naga' snakes (a Buddhist symbol of wisdom and justice traditionally represented as a seven headed cobra), and a lion.
