An informal portrait of Denley Pike, an Australian language teacher who was invited by the International Development Programme of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDPAUC) to establish the Australian Centre for English Language Training (known as ACE) in Phnom Penh in 1992 to coincide with the deployment of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). ACE's most popular and useful programme was English for Personal and Professional Development, which was heavily subscribed by Cambodians involved with the UN, government workers, non government organisations (NGOs) employees and students. All of the 740 Khmer interpreters employed to work alongside the international electoral observers were given 3 months of intensive English training by ACE prior to the polling in May 1993. Since then, branch offices of IDP have opened in Battambang, Siem Reap and Kompong Cham, with IDP providing assistance to Cambodia's education and examination system.
