Description

Two naked young Khmer boys play in a gutter near a flowing water pipe in the backstreet behind a group of dilapidated apartment blocks located just off Phnom Penh's Lenin Boulevard. A rattan screen behind them forms the wall of one of the many squats built on vacant ground behind the apartment blocks. In such slum conditions and with a poor diet, these young children will be susceptible to malnutrition, tuberculosis, dengue fever, malaria, hepatitis and polio, as well as other dangers such as child prostitution and HIV/AIDS. In the aftermath of decades of civil war and negligible health services, one child in five will not live beyond five years old.
