Description

A young double amputee guides his crude wooden framed wheelchair through a main thoroughfare in central Phnom Penh as cyclos and mopeds pass in the background. Behind them, lines of new vehicles - many belonging to the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) are parked. Once the exclusive domain of cyclos, bicycles and ancient, battered old Russian and Chinese trucks and buses, the streets of Phnom Penh were transformed with the coming of UNTAC as over 8,000 new modern vehicles crowded the often inadequate roads.
