Description

Rising above the open pits of the killings fields of Choeung Ek, this white marble and yellow tiled Memorial Stupa (or Chedi) contains the skulls and other exhumed remains of almost 9,000 victims - men women and children - of Tuol Sleng prison, a top secret facility located in Phnom Penh where up to 17,000 were tortured and killed from 1975 to 1979. The skulls have been laid out on tiers and labelled according to age and sex, and many show the holes and cracks that tell of their violent deaths. The Stupa is the focus for Cambodia's annual Genocide Day, held every 9 May to commemorate the estimated 2 million victims of Pol Pot's regime. In the background to the left is a red roofed display board on which are exhibited photographs of some of the victims of Tuol Sleng and other images showing the initial exhumation of some of the pits.
