Description

Members of a pro-Indonesian rally gathered on the grassy sports oval in Gleno prior to the referendum for East Timor's independence. A number of the men are playing instruments and one is carrying the Intergrasi flag. Standing in front of the crowd is believed to be the Bupati (mayor) of Gleno, Dr Constantino Soares. Intergrasi is an Indonesian backed paramilitary group and supported East Timor's autonomy within Indonesia. Following the overwhelming vote for independence, the pro-Indonesian militia launched a campaign of destruction, arson and murder, killing approximately 1500 people and forcing 300,000 others into West Timor as refugees.
