An Australian forward Artillery Observation Post, in the Crater on Broodseinde Ridge, in the Ypres sector, in Belgium. The position was shelled and machine gunned each day and gassed at night. Just after the photograph was taken, the officer observer and his sergeant were wounded by a shell.
