Description

British recruiting poster, produced early in the war. This is a text based poster with no images. The design relies on the juxtaposition of green and orange ink, and varying font sizes to draw the viewer's attention. The text is set against a white background, and is surrounded by a green and orange border. This poster is referring to the killing of civilians in the town of Scarborough by the German navy, who raided Scarborough, Whitby, and Hartlepool on December 16th, 1914. The attack on Scarborough was the most controversial, as it was an undefended town (the Germans thought that it was defended). Eighteen civilians died in the attack; a further 86 civilians were killed in the attack on Hartlepool. The date of the poster indicates it was produced in rapid response to the raids.
