1805 "England Expects" 1915: Are you doing your duty today?
Description
British recruiting committee poster; No. 101. Depicts Horatio Nelson against the backdrop of First World War battleships silhouetted against a setting sun. By including the black and white drawing of Nelson in the foreground, the poster alludes to his great sacrifice during The Battle of Trafalgar; Nelson was injured during the course of the battle, and subsequently died. He became a national hero, and a rallying point for Britons as the Napoleonic wars dragged on. The title runs across the top and bottom of the poster, in white on a brown background. It asks the viewer, 'Are you doing your duty to-day?'.
