Studio portrait of 14598 Sapper Alan Fairlie "Bill" Kyle, 4th Divisional Signal Company. Sapper Kyle enlisted on 7 February 1916 and returned to Australia on 26 September 1917. During the Second World War he was a resident and Assistant District Officer at Nomatanai, New Ireland. He became a coastwatcher, ranked as a lieutenant, on 23 January 1942. Another resident and Patrol Officer of Namatanai, Sub-lieutenant Gregory Wade Benham also became a coastwatcher at the same time. Both were executed on 1 September 1942 on Nago Island. Kyle was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) in November 1945. Both Kyle and Benham had two opportunities to escape in February and April 1942 but chose to remain and work together.
