Victoire des Flandres 1814 - 1914 [Victory in Flanders 1814-1914]
Description
French First World War poster featuring an historical parallel simply put by the renowned French artist Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962) comparing similar military events. Domergue compares the deliberate flooding of the Belgian lowlands in October 1914 to halt the German advance with the difficulties Prussia and her Allies had in pursuing Napoleon exactly one hundred years previously. The image fills the whole and shows the Kaiser glumly riding his horse and leading the German Army through a flooded landscape. The title text frames the image top and bottom both set within a white border.
