Description
Citation for the Military Medal awarded to Private Smythe for his actions on 9 August 1942 at Kokoda. Serving with 39 Battalion, Smythe held off at least seven Japanese assaults on his section's position for a period of 24 hours. This was done despite being wounded, having to take command of the section and having only two other wounded men remaining who could assist him.
