[Recruiting poster]
Description
British recruiting poster produced by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee. This is an extremely unusual poster, as it has no title, or indeed, text. Additionally, it is a photograph, as opposed to an illustration - most British recruiting posters of the time were text-heavy, and any images were illustrations, not photographs. The simple black and white photo depicts a Grenadier Guards drill sergeant, who is rather portly, and wears a somewhat aggressive expression on his face: he is gesturing to the viewer to come and join him. Presumably, recruiting posters had become common enough by 1915 for the designers of this poster to exclude text, and rely solely upon the image of the sergeant to convey the recruiting message.
