Provide the sinews of war - buy Liberty Bonds
A United States First World War poster issued by the United States Government to promote the sale of Liberty Bonds. The poster features an expressive black and white lithograph by Joseph Pennell of a battleship under construction. A Liberty Bond was a war bond that was sold in the United States to support the allied cause in World War I. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty. Joseph Pennell (1857–1926) was an American artist and author. Born in Philadelphia, he studied there but afterwards went to Europe and made his home in London. He produced numerous books (many of them in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell), but he became known as an original etcher and lithographer, and notably as an illustrator. He taught at Slade School of Art. He was prolific also for his writings on the graphic arts and he also wrote an autobiography. Once America became involved in the war, Pennell became associated with the design of posters for the Division of Pictorial Publicity.
