Gerber, John George Joseph (Chief Petty Officer, b.1909 - d.1986)
Description
Papers of Chief Petty Officer John Gerber relating to his service with HMAS Adelaide in the Solomon Islands in 1927. The collection consists of a notebook containing a record of messages between HMAS Adelaide and various correspondents including South Head, Rabaul and Tulagi shortly prior to, and during, its voyage to the Solomon Islands. Times for the messages are included but no dates. The messages provide a brief account of the Australian troops sent to the Solomon Islands to apprehend some natives, led by Basiano, who were responsible for a series of murders. Gerber also writes of his personal experiences and observations of this mission. Included in the book is a newspaper article relating to the murders and the hunt for the natives.
