Description

United States Second World War poster promoting the purchase of war bonds. The poster was produced by the United States Treasury Department and shows a hand clenching 100 dollar war bonds, with the torch of the Statue of Liberty in the background. Ewart Melbourne Brindle (1904- 1995) was born in Melbourne, the city in Australia from which he took his name. He was a painter, illustrator and designer. His father was a well-known painter and his son soon showed the family talent. When he was a boy, his family emigrated to the West Coast of the United States. He began his career as an illustrator for a local department store and later with an advertising agency. His work on the Hawaiian tourism account brought him attention and two New York Art Directors Gold Medals. Brindle moved to New York City in 1938. Amassing a group of Fortune 500 clients, Brindle became known as the foremost illustrator of cars in the United States from the 1930s to the 1960s. He also produced cover art for the 'Saturday Evening Post' and the 'Medical Times' . During his life, Brindle also produced designs for everything from furniture to real estate developments and posters.
