Description
Portrait of 367 Corporal Geoffrey Travers of Elsternwick, Vic. He enlisted on 19 September 1914 and embarked for Egypt on HMAT A10 Karroo in Melbourne. He died on 11 August 1916 of a bullet wound to his abdomen received at Bir el Abd, Sinai while serving with the 9th Australian Light Horse. Note he is wearing sergeant's stripes, although he was a temporary sergeant only between 5 December 1914 and 20 January 1915. He died in the Hod Hassenein Canal Zone at the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance. His burial service was conducted by Captain Chaplain Collick and he was later reinterred at Kantara War Cemetery.
