Description
England. Unidentified members of the Enemy Mining Section (EMS) of HMS Vernon nonchalently waiting-two are smoking- for the explosive to be steamed out of an unexploded German aerial mine. A long thin pipe (left) is the source of low pressure steam and the now molten explosive can be seen pouringfrom the mine (left). The hole in the centre of the metal casing (far right) housed the detonator and once safely removed and steaming completed, the mine would have been removed to HMS Vernon for scientific analyis. The explosive would have been disposed of by burning it on site.
