Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Melnotte Arthur Roberts, a member of the NSW naval contingent which travelled to China to take part in the Boxer Uprising. The NSW contingent arrived in Peking on 16 October 1900 and Lt Roberts was, along with Lts Cecil Murnin and Oscar Gillam and 50 men, allotted to guard the British Legation in Peking. He is wearing undress tailcoat configured as a form of full dress for a part time volunteer officer.
