Studio portrait of 19811 Sapper (Spr) Ronald King Somerset Alford, Field Company Engineers. A grazier from Corfield, Qld prior to enlistment, Spr Alford embarked with the August Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 21 November 1917. After joining the 10th Field Company Engineers, he became ill at Suez and was evacuated to England suffering from rheumatic fever. He returned to Australia where, on 7 December 1918, aged 20, he succumbed to his illness and was buried in the Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane.
