Informal portrait of Leading Seaman Ernest George Dandridge, Royal Navy, HMS Renown. Dandridge's mother, Elizabeth, a widow of a British soldier, emigrated to Australia c 1908 with six of her seven children. The eldest child, Ernest, was serving in the Royal Navy. Dandridge was one of only six survivors from the battle cruiser HMS Invincible, after she was sunk at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He was then transferred to HMS Renown, where he was awarded the silver French Medaille Militaire. One of Dandridges' brothers served with the AIF, he was: 2847 Sapper William Dandridge, 3rd Tunnelling Company, who enlisted on 7 February 1916 and returned to Australia on 15 January 1919.
