Digger brand. "Don't argue"
Considering that most pre-1914 Australian posters were produced for commercial reasons, it is not surprising that posters like Diggers' Brand appeared. This poster directly references a very well known 'Don't Argue' advertisement for Hutton's Hams and Bacons, and even uses a pineapple motif within the border of the poster much as the original advertisements did. The playful nature of the poster reflects the relief that followed the end of the war. While the serious business of recouping the cost of the war had to continue, the stentorian tones of war-time posters eventually gave way to more positive imagery. The Diggers' Loan was the last of the Peace Loans, and had raised 10,086,940 pounds by the end of 1921. The caricature of the man on the left represents Mr Billy Hughes, then Prime Minister of Australia.
