Studio portrait of 10356 Gunner (Gnr) Herbert Edwin Stear. A railway employee from Bendigo, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Stear embarked with the 13th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade from Melbourne on HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. Later wounded in the abdomen he was evacuated to hospital where, on 7 August 1917, he succumbed to his wounds and was buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium.
