An unidentified female Australian Federal Police Officer, a member of the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), standing infront of a memorial cairn, probably dedicated to Sergeant (Sgt) Ian Donald Ward. Sgt Ward was a NSW Police Officer in the 11th Contingent to Cyprus and had only be in the country for five days before he was killed on 12 November 1974 as he was evacuating a Turkish family to safety in the north. They had to pass a minefield, but a recent mudslide has washed one of the mines onto the road. He tried to avoid the mine, but one wheel of the car clipped the mine and he was killed along with one other person. UNFICYP started in 1964 and still exists today, with officers policing the official buffer zone separating Greek and Turkish Cypriots ensuring humanitarian assistance is provided with the objective of creating an environment for reunification.
