Captain (Capt) Peter McCarthy at a briefing, looking at an Observer Group map of Lebanon. Capt McCarthy was a member attached to OGL (Observer Group Lebanon) as a United Nations Military Observer (UNMO). OGL, a multinational UN peacekeeping force, was a unit of UNTSO (United Nations Truce Supervision Organization) under the operational control of Force Commander UNIFIL (UN Interim Force in Lebanon). On 12 January 1988 Capt McCarthy was on patrol with a Canadian observer, driving down from a hill in in Southern Lebanon when their jeep hit a landmine; Capt McCarthy was killed and the Canadian was severely injured. Capt McCarthy was posthumously awarded the RSL Anzac Peace Medal.
