One of the thousand Y.M.C.A girls in France...
American First World War poster issued to promote the war work of women for Young Men's Christian Association and to advertise the United War Work Campaign 11 - 18 November 1918. It features a central image of a Y.M.C.A girl handing out books and a hot drink. Behind her is the red triangular emblem of the Y.M.C.A. The title and text printed in dark blue is positioned in the lower left and right. During the war over 5000 American women worked in Canteens and clubs in France sponsored by the YMCA. They served coffee and donuts, handed out books and letter writing materials. The United War Work Campaign raised 170 million towards the war effort via the combined efforts of seven welfare organisations : The YMCA ; YWCA ; Knights of Columbus; the Jewish Welfare Board ; the War Camp Community Service ; American Library Association and the Salvation Army.
