Description

Collection relating to the service of 138015 Chaplain (later Principal Chaplain) Leonard Sydney Eacott on Operation Gemini with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), 1992-1993.

The collection includes a green folder containing a tourist map for Phnom Penh, a notebook, a yellow card with 'Instructions for all members of the UNTAC Military Component Regarding Opening Fire in Cambodia', an 'Australian Defence Force (Army) Soldiers Handbook Operation Gemini Cambodia' and a diary. The diary contains entries from 11 September 1992, when Eacott was informed of the deployment, to 6 October 1993, when he returned to Australia. Eacott writes of the emotional highs and lows leading up to, and during, the deployment and his experiences in Cambodia, including visiting the genocide museum, a deterioration in security in April 1993, and his work as army chaplain. He also writes of the recreational activities of Australian military personnel in Cambodia, including discussion on those that frequent the sex workers.

The collection also includes a circular United Nations cloth patch, and a 1987 postcard sent by a colleague in Perth while Eacott was at the Anglican Parish of Oakey in Queensland.
