Description

Lieutenant General Robert Harold Nimmo CBE, Australian Army (right) speaks with United Nations Secretary General U Thant in New York in the early 1960's. Lieutenant General Nimmo was Chief Military Observer with United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) from 1952 until his death on 4 January 1966. He was the first Australian General to command a United Nations (UN) mission and was chosen because the UN considered an Australian best suited to supervise a dispute between two Commonwealth countries.
