Description

Group portrait of members of the 1st Dragoon Guards. Identified seated centre left is Thomas Henry Darley. Darley enlisted for five years with the 9th Lancers and with the 1st Dragoon Guards for 17 years, he served in the South African (Boer) War between 8 January 1901 and 6 June 1902. Darley later emigrated to Australia and as a professional soldier he enlisted with the AIF on 2 November 1914. He was allocated the service number 2 and the rank of Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant (RQMS) with the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment. He sailed aboard HMAT Karroo on 11 February 1915. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to the rank of captain on 16 August 1916 and again promoted to major on 28 August 1917. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 10 July 1919. Major Darley was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on 12 December 1919, for his services during the First World War.
