Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 58 Private (Pte) Wilfred John Wilson, 24th Battalion from Ballarat North, Victoria. A 35 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 19 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the Headquarters Details - Pioneers from Melbourne on 10 May 1915 aboard HMAT Euripides. While serving at Gallipoli, he was taken ill and invalided back to Australia. After arriving in Australia on 22 November 1915, he was discharged on 25 January 1916. He died on 22 April 1917 and his death was certified as "materially aggravated by War Service". He is buried in the Ballarat General Cemetery, Victoria. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
