Description
Studio portrait of 1825 Private (Pte) John Preston Walker, 8th Battalion, of Dandenong, Vic. Pte Preston enlisted on 22 August 1914 and was killed in action on 27 July 1916 at Pozieres in France. At the time of his death, Sergeant Preston had been recommended for a commission. He had a reputation as a keen sportsman whose achievements included the 1908 Captaincy of the Melbourne Grammar School Cricket Team, winner of the 1912-1913 seasonal batting average while playing with the East Melbourne Cricket Club, and a period playing VFL with the St Kilda Club.
