Studio portrait of 412714 Flying Officer (FO) Michael O'Meara Shanahan, RAAF. FO Shanahan, a pilot serving in No 156 (Pathfinder) Squadron RAF, was killed flying over Germany on 3 September 1943. FO Shanahan's Pathfinder squadron was assigned to mark targets in Berlin in advance of the RAF bombing raid on that city. He took off from the squadron's base at Warboys at 1948 hours, the aircraft and crew were lost without trace. FO Shanahan's name and those of all his crew are commemorated on the Royal Airforces Memorial at Runnymede. FO Shanahan's crew comprised: 406772 Pilot Officer (PO) John Cyril Collins, RAAF; 413552 PO Neil Haward Denyer, RAAF; 411243 PO David Laing Dodds, RAAF; 647729 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Tom Hoyle, RAF; 409485 Flight Lieutenant Hume Melville Stafford, RAAF and 522964 Flt Sgt George Wilson, RAF.
